Subrata Dutta, Director, Standard Chartered Bank, visited the BIBS campus on August 5, 2011. The informative session was filled with fun and humor and at the end of the day the students had a lot to take home from this session. This was especially an enriching session for students keen to join the banking sector.

An IIM alumnus with over 26 years of professional experience in the banking sector, Subrata Dutta had started his career with the Canara Bank. He next moved on to Standard Chartered Bank and is with them ever since.

Emphasizing the concept of building strong fundamentals he went on to elaborate the genesis of banking services in India. In his lecture he also
touched upon concepts of Working Capital Cycle, MPBF (Maximum Permissible Bank Finance), Balance of Trade and the functions of RBI. Some other concepts he discussed included ECB (External Commercial Borrowing), role of banks in Mergers and Acquisitions, LIBOR (London Interbank Offer Rate), DICGC (Deposit Insurance Credit Guarantee Corporation) and KYC (Know Your Customer).

In the second part of his lecture he elaborated how the banking sector had handled the turmoil in the economy in the year 2008-09. Towards the end he elaborated on a few concepts of ‘Retail Banking’ such as wealth management, third-party insurance, among others.

This guest series helped the students to strengthen their concept of fundamentals in banking.
