IBM HR Team mentoring BIBS students at IBM Office.
At BIBS, I got the opportunity of interacting with several professionals from the corporate. Some speakers inspired, some motivated and some provoked my thoughts. Being in such an institute where every week there is corporate interaction, I had assumed the same to happen when I came to know that the entire HR team of IBM will be coming to our college and mentor us first in our campus and subsequently at IBM Office. Excited though, I still couldn’t believe that it was for real. It was.

We were divided into groups, each assigned to a mentor. My mentor was Mr. Joy Das. I was excited with lots of questions in my mind. We started with introduction and planning. In the very first session, my
mentor shared his experience and emphasized upon the importance of planning. He talked about its practical aspects, linked it with simple things that one does in daily routine and how things could go awry if one failed to plan.

In further sessions I gradually got acquainted with various HR practices in organizations. The very basic and routine job of an HR – Recruitment was just a chapter to me but now I am aware of it as an industry which is as big as any other with its nuances and repercussions. This industry faced a tough time during recession post which new trends emerged.

I also came to know of tools which are actually employed for performance management by companies and how employees are assessed. A huge amount of effort goes behind devising the career path of an employee. Consultancies like Hewitt, Mercer etc. play a very important role by bringing out their survey reports on industry benchmark for compensation, employment trends, etc which is a significant tool at the disposal of HR department.

I was amazed to know how much of quantitative data is required in decision making and strategizing. HR is linked to the EBITA (Earnings before interest, tax and amortization) of an organization and its contribution in the profit can be assessed by quantifying it.

Each session added value as I learnt new things on the practical front. It was interactive as well as informative. I wish if this opportunity were given much earlier so that I could have had more of these sessions.
