On July 9, 2011 a panel discussion on sales and distribution was held at BIBS. The seminar that was attended by industry stalwarts like Mr. Subir Chowdhury (Zonal Manager- HCL Digital Electronic Biz), Abhay Kumar Singh (Regional Manager- LG Handsets), Anindya Mukherjee (Sales Manager- Aircel Handsets BIZ) and Mr. Dev Narayan Sarkar (GM Sales, PEPSICO).

The enlightening discussion made the students aware of various facets in the industry. The discussion began with Mr. Anindya sharing his career related experiences with the students. He pointed out that an MBA student needs to acquire industry readiness before entering the corporate world.
He also gave insights on the functioning of the telecommunication industry and gave tips on handling a few common issues related to the sales and distribution function of a telecom company.

Mr. Anindya inspired the students when he pointed out that with dedication and right attitude one can successfully climb up the corporate ladder. He also discussed about several brands (which included both failed as well as successful brands) and gave students insight on what led to their failure or success. He shared the success story of I-phone with the students and this specially was an enlightening experience for the students.

The next speaker was Mr. Abhay Kr. Singh. Unlike his predecessor he had an interactive session where he first listed the student’s questions and then ensured that the students found their own answers. In his address to students he mentioned that as a management student as well as while performing the role of a manager one always needed to keep himself/herself open to learning. Mr. Abhay also pointed out that with the rapid change witnessed in technology there was a huge competition in the market and one needed to be well prepared for the same. Being prepared would allow one to grab the best opportunities, he pointed out.

The speaker emphasized that developing a skill set or knowledge was a must to survive in today’s competitive scenario. Opportunities exist but one needs to grab the opportunities before others and for that one needs to be prepared and competent, he pointed out. It was a must to join a well structured organization as else ones career plans might go haywire.

The next speaker was Mr. Subir Chowdhury from HCL Digital and he held a session which was interesting as well as educative. Citing examples from his own corporate journey Mr. Chowdhury enlightened the students about the nuances of the corporate world. He clearly pointed out that with right amount of determination and honesty one could be a sure shot winner in life. Never compromise on ethics was his mantra for students! Citing example of the film Rocket Singh: Salesman of the year, he said that, “Business is nothing but people, so always value people and respect them. Try not to cheat anyone including you. Be honest to your goals and dreams”.

The session was moderated by Mr. Dev Narayan Sarkar who is also a visiting faculty at BIBS. Over all it was an enriching and enlightening session for the students.
