Before going into the details as how can a mentor shape your career path, we should first realize who a mentor is? “A trusted counselor and guide” is what the dictionary says about mentors. Therefore, we can very well claim that a mentor is an individual, who is adorned with adequate knowledge and experience to take you under his guidance and show you the way to achieve your career goals.

During those career building days of your life, your mentor should ideally be your friend, your philosopher, and your guide. He will be the one who will be responsible for molding your future professional life. The mentorship programs undertaken either at career training institutions or at the workplace is ideally dedicated to enhance one’s career path. It couples an individual, who is fresh in the institution or in the work field, with another individual who is seasoned in that very field. The mentor essentially complements the students with all the expertise he has acquired himself.

Respectful and inspirational interface between the student and the mentor enhances the knowledge of the student as well as opens a wide vista of career opportunities in front of him in the way of right contacts and proper counseling. Moreover, it also acts as a opportunity for the mentor to pass knowledge and wisdom from one generation to another.

But for a successful mentorship program to take place, two individuals  ¾ the mentor and the student ¾   should be chosen on the basis of the knowledge and expertise of the mentor, the field of interest of the student, communication capability of both, and also mutual consent about the choice of the mentor or the student.
