The Bengal Institute of Business Studies organized the “Management Guest Inspire Series” with a twist this year. As aspiring managers from top-B schools in Kolkata or in any other state, it is essential for students to learn and know-how management plays an important role in everyday life. To throw light on this, we invited the flag bearer of Indian football and the one who has inspired many who had only dreamt of pursuing sports as their career, Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia.

Bhaichung Bhutia is an eminent sports personality who has been a part of Indian and international football for many years. He now runs a very successful football association called Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools.

It was a privilege for students to interact with him and understand how one can draw so many parallels between sports and management. In his journey from starting from a small village in Sikkim to being a part of the most successful national and international clubs, he has received many precious awards and accolades.

Here’s a glimpse of the five takeaways from this enlightening session at BIBS, by Mr. Bhutia.

1. Take challenges as they come!

Being managers it is crucial for all to take up challenges and not avoid them. As Mr. Bhaichung said that the biggest challenge that he faced in his career was pursuing sports. He said that if you are passionate about something, and you have the talent there is nothing that can take you back. This is what managers should also learn. Taking up challenges and finding solutions for them is the must-do habit of managers.

2. It's important to say no.

Being a manager, you must learn to say no. You can open the door for someone else on your team to say yes if you learn to say no. It's a fact that you can't accomplish everything on your own. It will become stressful, and everyone else will miss out on learning chances.

3. Be realistic with what you want to pursue

The most commonly used phrase by big leaders is “Set Achievable Goals”. This is what Mr. Bhutia also believes. He said that you must set realistic goals and these goals must be in line with your passion. He further added that there are individuals who pursue football, just by seeing the lavish life the players are living and not by seeing the struggle they are facing. He quoted “People tend to become Sachin Tendulkar, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi without examining the talent they have, so this is where a line needs to be drawn.”

4. Analyze your strength and weakness

An important aspect that is taught in management colleges in Kolkata and other states is SWOT Analysis. SWOT is a study that is undertaken by businesses to analyze the internal and external factors to know the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Mr. Bhutia highlighted that you must do this analysis in life as well. You must be aware of what really interests you and if you have the passion, it will help you in turning it into your career, but with it having the talent is also very important. A passion without the prerequisite skills does not add value. This can only be identified when you understand yourself from within.

5. Self-discipline is the key

Mr. Bhaichung, being a sportsman, recommended all the students at BIBS to generate a vogue of self-discipline within themselves. It is essential for managers to follow a disciplined life, as then only they will be able to inculcate this within their team and other co-workers. Self-discipline allows you to pick, and then stick with, activities, ideas, and behaviors that lead to progress and success. It also offers you the power and inner fortitude to fight addictions, procrastination, and laziness, as well as to complete any task you set out to complete.

Management, life, and learning with Bhaichung Bhutia was a very enlightening session for students at BIBS as it added managerial value to their lives. The students learned the importance of pursuing what they like via Mr. Bhaichung’s eye. He gave them lessons that will help them turn out as better leaders of tomorrow. The Bengal Institute of Business studies is one of the best MBA colleges in Kolkata that look forward to organizing these sessions with world-class leaders so that our students get practical exposure to the field of management.
